Artist Statement

This was the second year I created a bra entry, I still wanted to produce an animal bra, since last year's idea didn't pan out. Having a little more skill and understanding, I wanted to stretch and make something more challenging than year one, but nothing too difficult. While watching an eyeglass commercial, I thought of doing an Owl. The scrap fabrics that I gathered from Lee Andersen the previous year would be perfect. I had a vision for my idea and described it to a friend who put it on paper just the way I envisioned it.

The bra had a lace overlay front. Because it had to have dimension, I bought a Styrofoam ball and cut it in half. Then I partially hollowed it out and inserted the half spheres inside the lace. I hand sewed the bottom to keep them from falling out. I then cut and hand sewed the faux fur fabric around the bra and its straps, strategically adding real bird feathers. The eyebrows were hand sewn faux fur fabric, with real bird feathers glued to the “fur” to help give a more realistic appearance. The eyes, a last-minute addition, were also glued on. The self-stick rhinestones were added to the eyes to make them pop and look less goofy. The owl nose was an additional challenge, but with Lee's advice I made the beak and sewed it to the piece.

Hence the birth of this owl bra!
