A single submission fee covers only one submission (a single piece of artwork). Multiple submissions per artist or team need to be filed separately.

Any winnings received will be entrusted to the primary artist named on the application form(s). ManneqART is not responsible for allocating monetary or in-kind awards to multiple artists working on the same section of the Competition. (Sculpture, Hair, and Make-up)

Copyright

Applicants must create original designs and concepts (“Artwork,” “Submission,” or “Entry”). Any form of plagiarism will ensure automatic rejection from the Competition.

Entries must comply with standard copyright guidelines and not infringe on the intellectual property rights of others. While taking inspiration from outside sources is encouraged, your ManneqART Artwork must stand on its own as a unique and individual entity.

Entries must not include trademarked elements. Entries featuring brand names, logos or any other form of corporate branding will not be accepted.

By submitting an Entry, Applicant acknowledges acceptance of the Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy and Legal Notice posted on this Site, including warranties and representations that their Artwork is not infringing any copyright or other intellectual property of another. Applicant further acknowledges that should an intellectual property owner attempt to enforce their intellectual property rights (such as, copyrights, trademarks, patent rights, right of publicity, trade secrets, and so forth), the Applicant will be responsible for paying for all the legal fees incurred by ManneqART in defending any lawsuit arising from such infringement, including attorney fees, damages or penalties, as described in the Terms and Conditions page.

Insurance

ManneqART strongly encourages artists to insure their work before submitting Entries to the Competition. Although we will treat your Artwork with care, we are not responsible for lost, damaged  or stolen submissions.

ManneqART is not responsible for “wear and tear” damage that might occur during the Competition, accidental or otherwise. This includes preparation (unpack, setup, pack-up) by ManneqART staff or passersby at Competition events (Live Hair and Makeup Competition, Public Display, Awards Gala) over the course of the Competition time frame.

Property Retention and Distribution

If selected for the competition, ManneqART will hold your artworks from the time we receive them until after the ManneqART Gala in November, unless other agreements are agreed to.

Upon receipt of your Submission(s), your work will be documented by ManneqART (in the form of photography, video, etc.). Any such imagery will be offered (free of charge) back to you (the Artist).

You will be contacted in writing if there is any expressed interest in purchasing your Submission(s), or for extended display of your Artwork.

ManneqART reserves the right to use and distribute any submitted documentation (writings, descriptions, captions, photos, digital artwork, images, or video) of competition entries. This includes documentation, submitted by artists and additional documentation captured by ManneqART staff, as described in the Terms and Conditions page.

If a submitted artwork wins any sponsored award (and subsequent monetary prizes), the intellectual property rights are retained by you (the Artist). By submitting your Artwork, you hereby grant to ManneqART, Inc. a royalty-free, unrestricted, worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive and fully sub-licensable right and license to use, perform and display your submitted material (in whole or part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it (temporarily and without damaging it) in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed.  Ownership of the Artwork rests with you (the Artist), unless otherwise negotiated in writing.

GENERAL RULES AND TIPS

General Rules and Tips

Safety

  • It is imperative that all materials used in your artwork are safe for use on the body and are non-toxic.

  • Your creation must allow the model to move safely. Models’ eyes must not be fully covered by any element of the design. A perforated screen is acceptable.

  • Any electrical materials used in the artwork must be self contained and managed safely.

  • No perishable items may be used in any designs.

Presentation

  • ManneqART cannot accept submissions featuring company logos or any other form of corporate branding.

  • Submissions must fall under the “PG” category and should be suitable for an audience of all ages.

  • That is to say that artworks can be scary, but not harmful, frightening, or violent.

  • They can be sexy, but not perverse or pornographic.

  • Costumes should cover at least as much of a woman as would a bikini, and at least as much of a man as would swim trunks.

  • We discourage the inclusion of realistic weapons but allow fantasy weapons.

  • Designs must be labeled with the designer’s name, phone number, email address and title of the piece.

Documentation

Photographs of your ManneqART submission(s) must accompany your application(s). Applicants need to prepare and upload these materials by April 30th. (photos do NOT have to be of finished work)

ManneqART (jury and staff) will use your photographs for the following purposes:

  • Populate the ManneqART Calendar

  • Choose Award Winners to participate in the ManneqART Awards Gala

  • Select works to display on mannequins in various locations inside and outside of Howard County, MD

  • Follow these photography guidelines to document your work in the best possible “light”:

    • Use a quality camera (not your phone’s camera)

    • Set clean, simple lighting

    • Shoot over a plain white background

    • 3-8 images, with one (1) or more front shot and at least two (2) detail images

File Formatting

ManneqART applicants must submit high resolution digital photographs (documentation) either by email or on digital media (CD, DVD, USB flash drive, etc.) sent through the mail.

Image formatting requirements:

  • Format: JPEG (.jpg) in “Baseline” format

  • DPI (dots per inch): 300

  • Maximum Dimensions: 3000 pixels on the longest side

Tips

  • Not sure where to begin? Visit our Inspirational Links page to browse spectacular galleries of winning WOW, NAHA, and IMATS submissions. Check out the ManneqART Gallery for artworks submitted to previous competitions. Remember, this kind of research is an exercise to foster inspiration for your work. Please do not plagiarize or blatantly misappropriate another artist’s work as your own – this is dishonorable and a direct violation of ManneqART’s Rules and Terms.

  • You can always contact ManneqART with any questions or concerns. You are also welcome to request a one-on-one discussion about your work or your portfolio. Take advantage of our knowledgeable jury early in the creative process to help guide you to an enthusiastic “yes!”

  • Spend time brainstorming ideas and developing concepts that complement your creative vision. Research intriguing artists, collect relevant imagery, and explore personal interests to build or strengthen ideas for your work. Try to incorporate compelling design cues and strong visual motifs that will make your submission stand out.

  • Plan ahead to avoid problems in the construction phase. Sketch your designs from multiple angles to account for various perspectives that viewers will see your work. You wouldn’t want to create a final piece that looks stunning from a head-on view, but dull and uninspired from the side.

  • Likewise, be sure to practice with any new fabrication techniques before making commitments with unfamiliar media. Craftsmanship is extremely important and is taken into account by the jury during the selection process.

  • Be sure to build quality and durability into your entry.  Artworks must be durable and able to withstand shipping as well as being placed both on a human model and on a mannequin for public display.

COSTUME RULES

Mannequin Measurements

  1. Head Circumference 23in/58.5cm

  2. Bust 34in/86cm

  3. Waist 24in/66cm

  4. Hip 34in/91cm

  5. Shoulder Height 54in/153cm

  • Submissions will be presented on mannequins supplied by ManneqART.

  • Costume submissions cannot be made smaller than the standard ManneqART mannequin size, as defined in our Mannequin Measurements chart (right).

  • Costumes must accommodate a range of sizes by use of Velcro, hooks at multiple points along the garment, ties, etc…

  • Directions for wear must be submitted with garments when shipped. Photographs, diagrams, and instructions are encouraged.

  • Designs must be flexible enough to permit passage through doorways (roughly 30-40″, or 75-100cm) and up stairs.

  • Costume Durability: Costumes must have a finished appearance (no visible tape, staples, dried glue, etc,), must be able to handle normal shipping and handling without damage, and must be able to withstand being put on and taken off live models and/or human size mannequins 10 times without tearing, coming apart or other visible damage.

  • Garments have to be able to be “stepped into” and not go over the model’s head (to allow for the hair and makeup elements). Please create a 46″ (117cm) hole to step into (after closures have been undone).

  • It is recommended that your costume be flexible and durable enough to be danced in during the Awards Gala.

Tips

  • Elastic bands, shoulder straps, and other similar materials are useful for building support structures into costumes.

  • Consider constructing your costume to compress like an accordion, pleat, squash, or stretch out. These characteristics are important for a model’s mobility and will also come in handy for shipping your costume!

  • Garment closures must be strong and simple to operate. Ties, hooks, and Velcro® are good. We do not recommend zippers except as decorative elements.

  • Masks are considered costume elements.

  • Models will provide their own basic shoes, either flats or heels. If you would like to include a shoe covering, be sure it can be secured to the foot while still allowing for safe walking.

  • If your garment requires the use of a strapless bra, nude underwear etc., please specify. If there are any specific undergarments needed for the costume, please include them when shipping your design.

  • Please include lingerie straps or any other means of hanging your garment for proper storage. If it is too heavy for basic straps, please include another method of hanging.

  • We recommend trying your garment on an actual person before shipping. Keep in mind stress point on the costume and make sure to reinforce them. Try to keep the costume as balanced as possible to ensure the safety of our models.

  • Think outside the sewing box! Don’t be afraid to step beyond your comfort zone!

  • Try using non-traditional materials as repurposed costume supplies. Materials can go beyond intended purposes to breathe new life into your designs. Common household items to help get you started: hardware supplies, small electronics, recyclable materials, natural objects, etc.

  • Costumes need to be shipped or delivered to ManneqART for various Competition events. Try to incorporate features that will allow for simple delivery, transport, and reassembly of your sculptures. For example, you can devise ways to roll, squish, or disconnect parts on your costume(s). These measures will provide ease and convenience for future disassembly, shipping, and reassembly of your work as it is transported to various ManneqART display locations around USA in 2016. See the Shipping Information page to learn more.
